Cladding FAQs
Can you put cladding over brick?
Cladding over brick is a great option for clients who are looking to refresh their facade without expensive demolition work or long renovation timeframes. As an added bonus, cladding over brick veneer can also provide the home with higher insulating qualities.
When cladding over brick in an existing home, there are some things you should consider:
- There will be a gap between the new cladding and doors and windows. You may need to explore options to conceal the gaps.
- Will you be using a batten system or fixing the cladding into the brickwork? Using a batten system is a simpler process that often produces a cleaner final result. A benefit of this for the client is that a batten system that runs over the brickwork can help to reduce heating and cooling costs by creating a thermal break between the cladding.
- How is the quality of the existing brickwork? Don’t skimp on the time it takes to knock off any protruding bricks or mortar. If the brick veneer surface is uneven, this can cost a significant amount of time down the line when you need to straighten the battens.
What is the difference between weatherboard and cladding?
You’ve no doubt heard the term “weatherboard cladding” before; you could be forgiven for thinking the two terms can be used interchangeably. While cladding involves layering one material over another, weatherboard is simply one type of cladding material.
Weatherboard is a relatively inexpensive and popular external cladding option in Australia thanks to the many variations in size, texture and style available. More than simply a cosmetic feature, cladding is used to provide thermal insulation to homes as well as to protect the structure from typical weather events.
Does cladding need painting?
Depending on the type of cladding material used on a home, painting may be either optional or recommended. Materials such as weatherboard are generally primed for paint and can be painted in just about any colour the client would like. Some timber cladding may only require semi-regular oil application to maintain its quality.
When choosing the right cladding option for your clients, it’s critical to consider the maintenance requirements of each material, as well as whether or not the chosen cladding will achieve the client’s desired look.
If you are planning to include painted cladding in your project, ensure you have the right paint type for your desired location and material. If you’re in doubt about the correct paint for your cladding, give Dahlsens a call. Our team of trade experts are happy to discuss your options.
Is cladding waterproof?
Cladding systems must be waterproof in order to prevent inclement weather affecting your client’s home. A cladding system may consist of multiple materials such as shingles, sheet materials or vertical boards. While the system itself should be waterproof when installed according to the manufacturers specifications, the materials used in cladding may require regular maintenance in order to remain weather resistant. Materials such as timber will typically require regular repainting or other maintenance in order to maintain their integrity.
When choosing cladding material with or for a client, take into account your clients lifestyle and ability to maintain the chosen material. Installing the right cladding during the initial build ensures your clients are able to happily enjoy their new home for many years to come.
