How do vapour permeable membranes (VPM) work?
VPMs provide an air and water-resistant barrier that assists with insulating a building, while also allowing water vapour from wall cavities to escape to the external air to mitigate condensation risk. They do this via a micro-porous layer of breathable film that acts to keep water out while allowing vapour to escape.
Where are VPMs required?
An AS4200.1 compliant Class 4 vapour permeable membrane is now required on all external walls within specific climate zones 4 to 8 under current NCC 2022 on Class 1, 2 and 4 buildings.
